Start here: what to check before you buy an NR chew

  • Confirm it’s actually nicotinamide riboside (NR), not niacinamide. They’re related but not interchangeable — label copy sometimes blurs this.
  • Look for a stated milligram dose per serving, not a proprietary blend. If the label won’t tell you the number, that’s a mark against it.
  • Ask whether the claim is structure/function or a cure. A supplement that “supports normal cellular function” is making a different promise than one implying it treats disease — the second kind should raise your eyebrows.
  • Check for third-party testing or a certificate of analysis. NR degrades and varies in purity across suppliers; a COA is the only way to know what’s really in the chew.
  • Weigh it against the whole pattern, not in isolation. In my practice, NR rarely does its best work alone — it earns its keep as one piece of a broader plan for an aging dog’s constitution.

I organize almost everything I recommend for aging dogs around one pattern: support the terrain the whole body is running on, rather than chasing a single ingredient as a fix. NR fits into that terrain-support role. It doesn’t replace it.

Nicotinamide riboside is a form of vitamin B3 — niacin’s family includes nicotinic acid, nicotinamide, and nicotinamide riboside itself, all of which the body can convert into NAD+, the coenzyme that more than 400 enzymes depend on to catalyze reactions, according to the Office of Dietary Supplements. NAD+ levels decline with age in most mammals, which is the biological hook behind the whole “NAD+ precursor” category of supplements, canine included. That’s a structure/function statement, not a treatment claim, and the distinction matters. NR isn’t positioned — by the reputable manufacturers, anyway — as something that reverses a diagnosed disease. It’s positioned as raw material the body can use to help keep its energy-production machinery running the way it’s supposed to.

The dog data: what’s actually been tested, and what hasn’t

Most of the strongest human NAD+ precursor research is exactly that — human. The canine-specific evidence is thinner, but it isn’t empty. A randomized, controlled trial published in Nature’s Scientific Reports enrolled 70 dogs with mild to moderate cognitive impairment into placebo, low-dose, and full-dose groups testing a senolytic-plus-NAD+-precursor combination; in the full-dose group, 89% of dogs improved or remained stable on owner-assessed cognition versus 60% on placebo. That trial didn’t test nicotinamide riboside alone — it tested an NAD+ precursor paired with a senolytic — so it’s evidence for the pathway, not a blanket endorsement of every NR chew on a shelf. I still think it’s the single most useful data point a dog owner can point to when a veterinarian asks “why do you want to try this.”

Owner-reported outcomes tell a related but separate story. A case that stuck with me

  • Dose to the label, not to guesswork. More NAD+ precursor isn’t automatically better, and dogs are not small humans metabolically.
  • Don’t stack multiple NAD+ precursor products (an NR chew plus a separate NMN or niacinamide product) without your vet weighing in — you can end up dosing the same pathway twice without realizing it.
  • Watch for GI upset in the first week or two. It’s the most common thing owners report with any new chew, NR included, and it’s usually mild and self-resolving.
  • Loop in your veterinarian if your dog is on other medications, particularly anything metabolized through the liver, since niacin-family compounds are processed there.

None of this makes NR dangerous. It makes it a supplement, not a treatment — and it deserves to be dosed and monitored like one.

The strongest counterargument to recommending NR is a fair one: the canine-specific trial data tests a combination product, not NR in isolation, and owner surveys aren’t controlled science. I take that seriously. But I still land on cautious support for trying an NR-containing product in an aging dog, provided the label states its dose plainly, the claims stay in structure/function territory, and your veterinarian is aware you’re adding it. The cellular biology is sound, the tolerability signal from the available canine trial is reassuring, and the downside — for a properly dosed, third-party-tested product — appears to be low.
